Obituary for Francis Joseph Sweeney, Jr.

Frank J Sweeney Jr. 50 year resident of Convent Station passed peacefully in his sleep at home Tuesday at the age of 93. Born and raised in Montclair NJ, Frank graduated from Montclair Academy in 1943. Frank completed his Freshman year at Georgetown University before enlisting in the US Navy. Frank served 2 years in the Pacific theater, honorably discharged he and returned to Georgetown after forcing the Japanese surrender. His studies suffered as he recovered from “Shell Shock” his first year back, before making the Dean’s List his final two years, Graduating in the “class of 47” in 1950. Frank’s experience with what today is known as PTSD, was a concern of his through out his life, he was a champion of all veteran’s rights and treatment.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Frank grew up playing football , baseball and golfing, while rooting for the NY Football Giants and the Yankees. He played golf around the world, home was Upper Montclair Country club where he joined with his father in 1947, he remained a member until his death. Frank shot his age carding an 81 on a buddy trip to Pinehurst, and when queried why he didn’t make a big deal about it, he deflected, “it wasn’t that tough a course.” In the Winter, unable to golf, Frank skiied. His love of skiing brought him throughout Europe , Canada, New England, the Rockies and fatefully to Mount Tremblant Quebec, where he met the love of his life, Gloria Lupo Sweeney. Following a lengthy courtship , Frank and Gloria wed on Friday December 9th, 1966 leaving Monday for a skiing honeymoon in Austria only after attending the Giants game at Yankee Stadium that Sunday.

Frank and Gloria settled in Convent Station soon thereafter. A devout Catholic, Frank was a daily communicant and active member of both Assumption and founding parishioner of St Thomas More Parish where he served as an usher, counted the collection, and brought Communion to the infirmed. Frank served the Fathers and Friends at Delbarton, where both his boys attended school in the 1980’s.

Frank retired as Sr Vice President of Sales from VFC corp in 1994. Subsequently going into real estate sales with his wife in the late 90s for something to do between his rounds of golf. Following the Passing of his wife in 2003, Frank found purpose working for Meals on Wheels, from 2003 until 2017. When asked about his volunteer work, he offered, “I deliver meals to old people”, he was nearly 90 at the time.He loved “his clients” and helping his community.

Frank is survived by sons, F. J. Sweeney III, and Peter Quentin Sweeney , Loving Daughter-in-law Susanne Sweeney, and 5 adoring grandchildren, Emma, Julia, Grace, Thomas, and Charlotte all of NJ. As well his older sister Joan S. Ruffing, a niece and five nephews. Frank will be missed by all who met him, at church, tailgates, or on the fairway.
