Obituary for Russell Lyle Hewit, Jr.

Russell Lyle Hewit, Jr. (known to all as Rusty) of Chatham, NJ died on Thursday, June 11, 2020 from complications of acute myeloid leukemia, which had been diagnosed only days earlier. He was 40 years old.

Rusty was a devoted husband to his wife Candace and a committed and doting father to their three young children, Grace, Hardy, and Jacquelyn. He was Vice President of Execution Services at Citadel Securities in New York.

Rusty was born on his father’s birthday, February 16, in 1980. He grew up with his three siblings in Chatham and spent summers in Normandy Beach, where he loved to run around barefoot and go sailing.

He attended Delbarton School, where he excelled as a student-athlete, playing soccer, ice hockey, and lacrosse. He was captain of the lacrosse team and graduated in 1998. He went to Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA, graduating in 2002.

Rusty immediately went to work as a market maker on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange with Kellogg Capital Markets—a smiling face on the floor for more than a decade. After joining Citadel Securities as part of its NYSE team, he transitioned to a sales trader role with Citadel Execution Services, where he flourished. Rusty was the consummate professional. He was warm, genuine and always put his clients first; his moral compass was his team’s true north; and he was beloved by all of his colleagues, clients, and peers.

In 2012, Rusty married the love of his life Candace Fisch of New Canaan, CT. They welcomed their daughter Grace one year later. After their son Hardy was born, they moved from New York City to Chatham and welcomed a third child, Jacquelyn. In Chatham, Rusty relished returning to his roots, and he coached youth soccer and lacrosse. He enjoyed creating “Daddy’s garden” and skating outdoors with his young family. His children share his quick-witted humor and love for mint chocolate chip ice cream and music by “Da Boss.”

Rusty loved and lived for his family and friends. Always the first one to be by your side—even before you knew you needed it—he would be there to offer a hearty joke, sound advice, a handwritten letter, a shoulder to cry on, and a hug to make you feel completely loved. Big hearted, kind, and always proud to celebrate everyone in his life, Rusty was the best of people. He made a huge difference in the lives of all that he touched.

Rusty is survived by his wife Candace Hewit and their children Grace, Hardy, and Jacquelyn, parents Nan and Russ Hewit, sister Meghan Hewit McCormick (brother-in-law John McCormick) and brothers Grant Hewit (sister-in-law Clara de Soto) and Alex Hewit (sister-in-law Lindsay Hewit), grandmother Patricia Hewit, and close friends and extended family.

An outdoor memorial service will be held on Friday, June 26 at 2 p.m. in the Senior Garden at Delbarton School (230 Mendham Road, Morristown, New Jersey).

Donations in memory of Rusty may be made to Delbarton School for the Rusty Hewit Scholarship Fund. (Delbarton School, Advancement Office, Attn: Craig Paris, 230 Mendham Road, Morristown, New Jersey 07960.)
