Obituary for Timothy Joseph Murphy

Timothy J. Murphy of Morristown, N.J., passed away on October 17, 2018, at the age of 64. Born in Morristown on August 22, 1954, to the late James F. Murphy and Catherine R. Murphy, he was also the youngest of his ten siblings: Patricia Netter, Marie Snyder, James Murphy (predeceased), Robert Murphy (predeceased), Kathleen Groves, Joan Farrell (predeceased), Bernadette Servis, Margaret Dinsmore, and William Murphy.
A lifelong resident of Morristown, Tim, affectionately known as “Murph,” was a graduate of St. Margaret’s School and also coached St. Margaret’s CYO basketball teams for several years with his dear friends who predeceased him, Tony Cattano and John Dever. Tim was also a graduate of Bayley-Ellard High School in Madison, N.J., class of 1972.
Tim joined the Morristown Fire Department as a volunteer in 1974 and was hired as a firefighter in 1980. During his time at the Morristown Fire Department, he went on to become both an arson investigator and a Captain of the Department, serving as one until his retirement in 1999.
Following his retirement from the fire department, Tim went on to serve as the Fire Safety Director for Morris County’s Bureau of Corrections until his retirement in 2012.
An active member of the community, Tim took great pride in serving the town he so loved and supported. He proudly served alongside Mayor Tim Dougherty on Morristown’s Board of Adjustment and was later appointed to the Morristown Planning Board, where he served as the Board’s Vice Chairman until his death.
Tim was also a proud member of New Jersey’s Firemen’s Mutual Benevolent Association, as well as the Morris and Essex County Emerald Societies.
An avid sports fan, Tim was always faithful to his two favorite teams: The New York Football Giants and the New York Yankees. Some of his favorite pastimes included playing golf, listening to classic Motown, hosting epic Morristown St. Patrick’s Day Parade parties, and meticulously maintaining his lawn. A lover of animals, his dogs were never far from his side.
Loved by so many, he will always be remembered for his giant heart, fierce loyalty, colorful opinions, and dedication to his wife, Kathryn B. Murphy, and his children, the apples of his eye, Catherine, Timothy, Jr., and Daniel (predeceased).
A wake is scheduled for Monday, October 22, 2018, from 4-8 pm at Doyle Funeral Home in Morristown. A celebration of life will take place on Tuesday, October 23, at 10 am at the Church of St. Margaret of Scotland in Morristown. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Tim’s name to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, 575 Woodland Avenue, Madison, N.J., 07940.
