Obituary for Mary Crummy

Mary I. Crummy, formerly of New Vernon, passed away peacefully on Friday January 31,2020 at Heath Village, Hackettstown, after a long illness. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of Christ the King on Saturday 2/8/20 at 10:30 am with internment to follow at Somerset Hills Memorial Park, Basking Ridge. Hours of visitation are between 4 - 8pm at the Doyle Funeral Home, 106 Maple Avenue Morristown.

Mary was the ultimate community volunteer; if an organization needed assistance, Mary was there to lend a helping hand. From being a founding member of the Church of Christ the King where her older three children recall climbing the big stairwell of the New Vernon firehouse in the 'old days' to attend mass to being a leader for both the Girl and Cub Scouts.
Christ the King Church and the New Vernon Volunteer Fire Department were her favorite places to give of her time once all her children were done with school. She often said she had so much fun interacting with the other volunteers it never really felt like work. Throughout the years Mary participated in the Women's Auxiliary for the Fire Department, particularly Operation Santa Claus and the annual Old Country Auction along with the many activities related to the Church and the Senior Citizens Club. She organized many trips through the Church to European destinations, the Annual Card Party and Fashion show, along with the wonderful Antique Show and the many dances held to celebrate the community friendships during the different holidays.
Mary was very honored to receive New Vernon's Distinguished Citizen of the Year award in 2009 recognizing her for her many years and countless hours of volunteerism in the community she so loved.
Mary was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, James L., her parents Arthur and Irene (O'Toole) and her brothers Arthur and John. She is survived by her loving children, Renee Gero, Kathleen Smith (Charlie), Andie Rice Gantert, Lori Henderson (Tim), Patti Bernard (Sean), and James (Dina), fourteen devoted grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Mary’s memory to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
