Obituary for Dennis S. Cook

Dennis S. Cook born 1951 in Newark, NJ died January 7, 2020 of Boonton, NJ from complications resulting from lung cancer. Dennis is preceded in death by his mother, Grace Jillson and father, Stephen Cook. Dennis is survived by his daughter Shanon Cook.

Dennis was born in Newark and completed high school in New Providence. In school he was known for his athleticism and was part of the Baseball & Basketball teams. After school, he served in the National Guard from 1971 to 1977.

Dennis never met an animal he didn’t get along with. Dennis worked at the Berkeley Heights Animal Hospital with Dr. Holmes & Dr. Marmur. Often four legged friends who came to the office scared & anxious would require a moment with Dennis who would win them over help them relax before they saw the doctor. Carrying on his legacy, his daughter still works with Doctor Marmur at this hospital. Dennis also work as CIBA in Animal Health & Husbandry. Later on in life, Dennis worked with a close friend as a painter and was well-known for being a perfectionist. His last calling was helping others through the Market Street Mission, where served as an associate resident director after graduating from the program himself. Regardless of the position he held, he always acted from his heart.

Dennis loved to be around animals and a great day for him was one spent curled up on the couch with his pets and watching the Patriots win a football game on TV. There was no animal big or small that he did not try and help. It did not matter if it was wild or domesticated, if it needed help he was there .

To his friends, Dennis was a true companion always willing to share in an adventure or lend a helping hand. He enjoyed fishing trips with his friends and would take his daughter with him as they enjoyed a day at sea together.

Where ever you accompanied Dennis he seemed to know someone who vied for his attention. Dennis would gladly stop to exchange a friendly word and find out how his friend was doing, genuinely concerned. He loved people and cared about their well-being but he was just as quick to call a spade a spade and the look on this

Dennis’s friends and family enjoyed his sly sense of humor and engaging personality. You knew Dennis enjoyed spending time with you as he would often wryly recall favorite happenstances you had shared together, in such a way they the memories seemed to get better with each retelling. He could wordlessly convey nuanced meanings with a mischievous wink, wry smile or a pawky glance. It was always fun to steal a glance at Dennis from across the room to get a read on what he thought about the situation at hand.

Shanon’s best memories of her father, Dennis, are of long days spent together (their pets too) “adventuring” by the lake then watching a horror movie in the evening all the while jabbering and laughing about the days events & their (mis)adventures.

Shanon, recalls her Father’s life as if it were her favorite book. That book which others might pass up in favor of another is a love story, its pages full of rich memories, true love, adventures, hopes & dreams, and life-long friendships. The characters are friends and family and bit characters who all play roles in bringing the story to life. Although it’s cover is now battered and worn its pages are stained and torn the book tells the story of every daughters favorite character, her father. The chapters & pages are filled with the adventures that brought love and meaning to her life and filled her heart with pride and joy. Sadly, at this time Shanon must now place her favorite book back on the shelf, its story has come to its climatic end.

The End
Good bye my beloved Father

The book, now closed, will always be there on its shelf and from time to time it will be taken down, its well-worn pages read again as cherished memories of times gone bye come back to life. Shanon is guided, each day, in her life by the lessons learned from that fable tome whose lead character so touched her heart. Shanon, now the author, is setting down her own story so her children too can have a favorite book, to her it’s a sequel, but to them it will be their favorite tome now with Shanon as their favorite character.
