Obituary for Daniel Sullivan

Daniel Mortimer Sullivan left this life at the age of 93 on Sunday, June 23rd, surrounded by his loving family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 o’clock on Thursday, June 27th at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary R.C. Church, at 91 Maple Avenue, in Morristown, NJ.

Dan, ‘Pop Pop’ to his grandchildren, and ‘Butch’ to his friends and family, was born to Irish immigrant parents on September 17, 1925, in Newark, NJ. He spent his early life ‘Down Neck’, in Newark’s Ironbound. Dan attended St. Aloysius School in Newark, and then East Side High, leaving school as soon as he was old enough to serve his country during World War Two. He enlisted in the United States Navy, and then returned to Newark after the war to become a firefighter. He worked for the people of Newark at the Ferry Street Station for forty years, retiring in 1990.

He was an eternally happy man, remembered for his jokes and his kindness. He married late in life, like all good Irishmen, but found his true love in Mary Gillin. They settled in Cranford, where Dan was a long-time active parishioner at St. Michael’s Church. He raised two devoted children, and was a dedicated and ever-present husband, father, brother, and neighbor. Despite the seeming modesty of his life, he touched everyone who knew him with his selflessness and joy. Everyone loved Butch.

Dan was predeceased by his parents, Daniel and Mary, his beloved wife Mary, and by his brothers and sisters, John, Julia, Dennis, Jane, and Mary. He is survived by his children Matthew of Bernardsville, and his wife Alyssa, and daughter Meaghan of Morristown, and her husband Mike, as well grandchildren Maeve, Margaret, Gillin, Nora, and Jane.
